Last year 119 prisoners in the UK killed themselves. It's horrifying to think that this means around one person every three days.
In 2014 the number of students who killed themselves rose to an even higher number, 130 students killed themselves in 2014! Equivalent to more than one every three days.
And this may even be half the real number. "In the UK, suicide is the leading cause of death among young people between 10-34, according to Office for National Statistics figures released for 2015." How sad this is.
Are universities really taking this seriously?
"At Cambridge, Galante insists it is not all about exams, and she isn’t sure her research will show mindfulness improving exam performance. “People here are perfectionist,” she says. “So it might be they do worse because they are more relaxed.” But if this means they are able to enjoy themselves more that is not necessarily a bad thing, she says. “That’s probably a more successful skill for life than being able to learn a lot, but not being able to face life unless perfectly prepared."
From the Independent; "On Facebook, increasing numbers are anonymously claiming that the university is failing to support them in the face of severe mental stress."
